(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The 725,000-strong General Confederation of the Portuguese Workers (CGTP) as well as the 500,000-strong General Union of Workers (UGT) said they would announce the date of the strike on Wednesday.
The government of Portugal has been increasing taxes while cutting spending in a bid to secure the next installment of a EUR 78 billion bailout package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
According to Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, the country needs new austerity cuts in its budget next year as it is going through a “national emergency.”
Meanwhile, the government is set to present its 2012 draft budget later to the parliament later on Monday.
Coelho said that the proposed austerity measures will include more tax hikes and wage cuts in the public sector.
