PLC: We should not be over-optimistic about UN resolution

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council Aziz Dweik emphasized in a letter to Palestinian National Council chairman Salim Za’noun that any political moves involving the Palestinian people’s destiny must be made by national consensus and a united Palestinian front.The statement comes in challenge of a unilateral move by the PLO to seek full membership at the UN with the compromise of having the receded 1967 borders.The PLC, the legislative body of the interim Palestinian Authority government created in the 1993 Oslo Accords, was left inactive because of Israeli persecution after Hamas gained the majority of the seats in the 2006 elections. The PNC is the legislative branch of the PLO, which signed the Oslo Accords, and it also includes the members of the PLC.“We are dismayed at the ongoing closure of the parliament (PLC) in the light of the present circumstances where the Palestinian citizen needs someone to speak a sincere and honest word in all political situations pertaining to the Palestinian cause and our people’s fate at present and in future,” Dweik wrote.In his letter, Dweik also highlighted the importance of benefiting from the ongoing Arab Spring, saying it has already begun to show positive results for Arab and Muslim interests, including that exclusivity in decision-making has been dwindling and systems are beginning to become more democratic.“From the results of our prior experience, particularly with the Oslo Accords, we must beware of reactions and the possibility of relapse ... and maybe even giving (Israel) what it wants without achieving anything to the interest of our people and cause.”“Our people can do without another Oslo (Accords) or fruitless negotiations that (Israel) would use to perpetuate its ‘settlement existence’ or the Judaization of Jerusalem and our sanctifies and buy time to impose a fait accompli on the Palestinian territories,” Dweik went on to say.He said that the PLO’s step at the UN must be weighed with its pros and cons, but he added that the situation at hand “compels us to concentrate on the cons and not to be over-optimistic” or illusive, given the fact that Israel and its powerful allies continue to plot against the Palestinians./129
