(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Ali Al-Ahmed, director of Institute for Persian Gulf Affairs (IPGA), said on Tuesday: “The US and Saudi Arabia are together against the emergence of a democratic national consensus in Yemen.”
He added: “A democratic Yemen is against the hegemony of the Saudi and the American powers in that region (Middle East).”
The analyst pointed out that if there were to be a national alliance in Yemen, Washington would no longer be able to maintain its drone base in Yemen under the pretext of combating al-Qaeda.
He further noted that Saudi Arabia is also against the formation of a democratic government in Yemen because Saudis do not wish to see a "stable and united” Yemen.
For several weeks, Yemeni protesters have been calling for the establishment of a transitional council to prevent the country's longtime dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh, from remaining in office.
Earlier this week, thousands of Yemenis took to the streets of the city of Taizz to condemn the US and Saudi interference in the country.
The demonstrators, who were carrying banners calling for the boycott of the US and Saudi products, accused Washington and Riyadh of attempting to prop up Saleh.
