(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - An American university professor said on Wednesday United States is afraid of democracy in Middle East, as that would lead to strength of Shi’as and Iran in the region
Political science Professor Ronny Lipschutz of the University of California at Santa Cruz added in an interview that the US has always been observing double standards in dealing with the countries in the Mideast, and today, too, the US foreign policy in the region is under the influence of the region’s oil and maintaining the US military bases in the Middle East.
Asked about the US double standards in dealing with the ongoing social unrests in different Arab countries, such as the Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Yemen on the one hand, and Syria and Libya on the other hand, Professor Lipschutz reiterated, “The American politicians and state officials do observe such double standards in the framework of their so called rationalist realpolitiks, but such policies cannot reach good endings in the long run.”
He said that democracy is only word of mouth regarding the Middle East when it is spoken of by the US officials, and it is spoken about when there is no other issue to be talked about.
Lipschutz added, “That is because the US politicians are afraid of establishment of democracy in the Middle East, which they think would lead to strengthening the Shi’as and expanding their realm of influence, which would eventually be to Iran’s favor.”
The professor of international relations and security focusing on the establishment of a Palestinian independent country at 1967 borders reiterated that the related plan dates back to 40 years ago, and has been applicable for four decades, while today Israel has constructed many of its Zionist townships on the east side of those borders and even on Golan Heights.
On the role of the Zionist lobby in devising the US policies, he said, “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly rejected the US President Barrack Obama’s proposal in that respect and the US Zionist lobby, too, rejected it, which is why Obama’s proposal has no chance for victory, and furthermore, President Obama himself has promised to veto the resolution on establishment of a Palestinian country I September.”
On upcoming US elections he said that the Republicans have thus far not nominated any good candidate for the 2012 elections, while it seems as if the Democrats, too, have not effective policy for harnessing Israel’s hegemonic bullying in the region.
