At least five people have been killed and three others injured after an attacker blew himself up in a supermarket in central Kabul in Afghanistan.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The blast occurred in a supermarket frequented by foreigners which is only a short distance away from the British embassy.

"A suicide bomber got into the supermarket and blew himself up," a police officer at the scene told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Five bodies were removed from the site of the bombing, AFP said, and police said three female foreigners were among those killed.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Ullah confirmed the explosion.

"The explosion took place at the Finest supermarket in the centre of Kabul near many embassies," he said.

"There are dead," the spokesperson further explained.
