Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), Kuwait reiterated its call for Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to subject its nuclear facilities to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This came in an interjection by member of the Kuwaiti delegation participating in the 2010 Review Conference of Parties to the NPT Review Conference, First Secretary Falah Al-Hajraf.
The discussion was in the second committee, dealing with regional affairs including the implementation of the 1995 resolution on the Middle East. The Kuwaiti diplomat called on the international community to apply pressure on Israel to comply with UK and IAEA resolutions and to make the Middle East a region free of nuclear weapons. Al-Hajraf also called on nations not to provide nuclear know-how and technology to Israel, nor cooperate with it in this field.
Kuwait believes that the possession of nuclear arms does not achieve security for any of the states. In fact, nuclear proliferation raises tension and conflict among people," he said, adding that it would spark a terrifying nuclear arms race, especially in the Middle East which still faced challenges threatening its security and stability.
He noted that all Arab states were members of the NPT, reflecting their keenness for peace and the good intentions they had towards people of the region. The Kuwaiti diplomat hoped that agreements in this area would be implemented, especially those related to the Middle East issued at the NPT Review Conference in 1995.
