AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jagan Chapagain wrote on X: "Once again, our network is in mourning for the loss of one of our colleagues.
I am deeply saddened by the killing of Dr. Somayeh Mir Abo Es’hagh, a 44-year-old volunteer of the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who lost her life on March 27 while on a Red Crescent mission to provide humanitarian relief assistance and psychosocial support services to those in need.
Only one month has passed since the start of the hostilities, and Dr. Somayeh is the second Iranian Red Crescent volunteer to be killed while saving the lives of others.
On behalf of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all her colleagues at the Red Crescent Society of Iran.
The killing of Somayeh and any attack on humanitarian aid workers is unacceptable and must be condemned.
We continue to emphasize the necessity of protecting humanitarian teams who risk everything to save lives. This is a moral and legal obligation."
The Secretary-General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies also wrote in another message on X: "In Iran, the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating. Over the course of nearly one month, more than 1,900 people, including women and children, have lost their lives, and at least 20,000 others have been injured.
Despite fear and uncertainty, the staff and volunteers of the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran continue to provide services with remarkable courage, delivering emergency relief and health services across the country.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is supporting this operation by increasing vital resources. We have launched an emergency appeal to support the efforts of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, including operational support and the international supply of essential items.
I call upon the international community to show solidarity by supporting this emergency appeal and the ongoing operations in Iran.”
