Israeli consumers spent nearly NIS 1.7 billion on bottled alcoholic beverages in 2009 (including VAT), about 3% more than 2008, according to a survey conducted by the research company Business Data Israel.

The survey analyzes the market for alcoholic beverages in Israel, and includes vodka, whiskey, arak, brandy, liqueurs, gin and rum. The survey is confined to sales in the local market: it does not include purchases at duty free stores.

Zionists consumed a total of about 21 million bottles of alcohol in 2009, according to the study, an increase of about 5% from the year before.

In terms of the number of bottles consumed the increase was far more moderate than in 2008 compared to 2007, when the number of bottles consumed rose by 11%.
