AhlulBayt News Agency: The Israeli occupation authority forced two Palestinian residents to demolish their own homes in the town of Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem, on Saturday morning under the pretext of lacking construction permits.
According to the Jerusalem Governorate, the Israeli municipality compelled Amjad Faraj to tear down his home in the Shuman neighborhood of Beit Hanina.
Faraj had built the house nearly eight years ago, and it housed a family of ten. Recently, the municipality fined him 40,000 shekels.
Another resident, Majed as‑Salaymeh, was also forced to demolish his home in the Ashqariya neighborhood of Beit Hanina at his own expense after receiving a demolition order from the municipality.
Jerusalemite homeowners often find themselves compelled to demolish their own homes to avoid paying the Israeli municipality extremely high fines and demolition fees.
Human rights groups and monitoring organizations say the rate of Palestinian home demolitions in east Jerusalem has nearly doubled since the beginning of the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza.
The demolitions are carried out by the Israeli municipal authority, which claims that many Palestinian homes and structures are built illegally without permits.
All attempts by Palestinian families in east Jerusalem to obtain building permits are rejected by the occupation authorities. As a result, growing families say they have no choice but to build without permits and face fines and demolition orders.
