AhlulBayt News Agency: Authorities at the Imam Hussein (AS) Shrine in Karbala are implementing artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies as part of a wide-ranging plan to ensure security during the Ashura commemorations.
According to the shrine’s official website, more than 2,000 high-tech surveillance cameras have been installed across Karbala to support an integrated security plan for the holy month of Muharram.
Rasoul Fazelah, head of the shrine’s General Security Administration, said that a joint operations center has been established in collaboration with shrine departments and local security forces to safeguard the ceremonies and protect pilgrims entering the city.
He explained that the camera network covers all entry and exit points around Karbala’s old city and includes advanced facial recognition and real-time analytics powered by AI. A dedicated cybersecurity team is also in place to defend against hacking and electronic threats.
Fazelah added that modern inspection tools have been deployed at shrine entrances, including advanced scanners for detecting concealed items in bags and carts.
He also noted that specialized cameras have been installed to automatically count pilgrims and monitor real-time crowd density and movement patterns, helping the control room manage traffic flow and congestion more efficiently.
These technologies, Fazelah emphasized, are part of the shrine’s broader mission to provide maximum safety and ensure a peaceful and dignified Ashura observance, which honors the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his loyal companions.
