Syrian chief opposition negotiator resigns over failure of UN talks

The chief negotiator of Syria's main opposition umbrella group, Mohammed Alloush, has resigned over what he called the failure of peace talks.

AhlulBayt News Agency - The Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) is reorganizing the negotiations team after chief representative in the Geneva talks Mohammed Alloush announced a decision to leave his post, a source close to the talks reported on Monday.

On Sunday, Alloush announced his resignation over the failure of the UN-mediated Geneva peace talks to bring a political settlement in Syria.

"The HNC is now changing the composition of their negotiations team," the source said.

A Syrian government delegation, as well as three opposition groups — the Riyadh-formed HNC, the Moscow-Cairo and the Hmeimim groups have been taking part in the Geneva talks.

The latest round of intra-Syrian talks took place on April 13-27. The HNC walked out of the negotiations, citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
