France to UN: Aleppo is Syria’s Sarajevo

French and British ambassadors to the United Nations, both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have stressed the importance for immediate action to bring a full ceasefire to Aleppo.

AhlulBayt News Agency - French and British ambassadors to the United Nations, both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have stressed the importance for immediate action to bring a full ceasefire to Aleppo.

France and the UK had requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the urgent situation in Aleppo, with the French ambassador comparing the city to Sarajevo.

“As you know, France, together with the United Kingdom, requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council to alert the international community about the situation in Syria and in Aleppo in particular. Because with Aleppo… the very future of Syria is at stake,” said François Delattre, French Ambassador to the UN.

“Yesterday I said that Aleppo is to Syria what Sarajevo was to Bosnia and I consider that the comparison… is valuable.”

Sarajevo was besieged for nearly four years, from April 1992 to February 1993, during the Bosnian War. More than 5,000 civilians were killed during the siege.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has convicted two Serbian officials, Stanislav Galić and Dragomir Milošević, for crimes against humanity committed during the siege.

“What we need to see is the full implementation [of the ceasefire agreement between the US and Russia in Aleppo] not a day more must continue the awful attacks on Aleppo” said Matthew Rycroft, the UK ambassador to the UN.
