AhlulBayt News Agency - The so-called Islamic State (ISIS) launched a late-night offensive at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport and nearby village of Al-Jafra, striking the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses at several flanks.
ISIS began the assault with their usual VBIED (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) attack at the Syrian Arab Army’s checkpoint outside the southern perimeter of the Deir Ezzor Military Airport.
The VBIED was destroyed by the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division before it could reach its intended target.
Following the failed VBIED attack, ISIS stormed the southern gates of the Deir Ezzor Airport, where they encountered heavy resistance from the Syrian Arab Army soldiers protecting this important military installation.
The battle would rage for nearly 4 hours before ISIS finally retreated due to a substantial loss of life on their side.
According to a military source at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the terrorist group lost an estimated 30+ fighters during their failed offensive, including several foreign militants.
In addition to their failure at the airport, ISIS was also repelled at the village of Al-Jafra; however, this battle did not last long because the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) was lurking around this farm area.
