AhlulBayt News Agency - Kurdish Peshmerga forces have strongly repelled an offensive by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in the south of Kirkuk province.
Mohammed Fayiq, a local official in Tuz Khurmatu district, confirmed that IS insurgents attacked Peshmerga frontline overnight Saturday, but the assault was immediately warded off by the Peshmerga forces.
According to Fayiq, the confrontations took place near the Peshmerga frontline in Maryambag village, south of Kirkuk province, with no Peshmerga casualties reported.
However, the insurgents were inflicted with heavy damages and high casualties, the Kurdish official revealed.
Peshmerga frontlines across southern Kirkuk areas have recently been targeted by several IS assaults, including car bombs and suicide attacks; but the Peshmerga have been successful in securing their lines and foil IS plots beforehand.
