Expressing Ankara's support for the current democratic movement in Egypt, the Turkish prime minister said on Wednesday that Mubarak's pledge to stand down in September is not enough and he should resign immediately.
"The [Egyptian] people expect a very different decision from Mubarak. The current administration does not inspire trust so far as the democratic change wanted by the population is concerned," the news channel NTV quoted Erdogan as saying during a visit to Kyrgyzstan.
On Tuesday, after days of anti-government protests across the country, the 82-year-old Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt for almost 30 years, announced that he would not seek reelection when his presidential term ends in September and pledged constitutional reform.
He also said that he would devote his remaining time in power to ensuring a peaceful transition to his successor.
Erdogan said the measures are not enough and the Egyptian people would only be satisfied after plans for an early transition of power are announced.
The Turkish prime minister also called for a handover of power to a temporary administration, saying, "The current administration fails to give confidence for beginning an atmosphere of democracy within a short period of time."
Opposition groups in Egypt have dismissed Mubarak's recent move as "a trick" to stay in power and have vowed to continue their demonstrations until Mubarak quits.
Protesters say they plan to march towards the presidential palace on Friday if Mubarak does not step down.
On Wednesday, the ninth day of anti-government protests, Mubarak supporters clashed with protesters in and around Cairo's Tahrir Square, which resulted in the death of at least one person and the injury of 500 others.
Reports say those who attacked demonstrators are plainclothes police officers.
The identification cards of some of the plain clothes police officers attacking protesters have been witnessed by a Press TV correspondent.
According to UN estimates, at least 300 people have been killed and many others have been injured during anti-Mubarak protests.
