The Salam Organization for Democracy and Human Rights, condemning documented reports of mistreatment of a number of detained Shiite scholars in Bahrain, including assault, sectarian insults, threats of sexual assault, threats of revocation of citizenship, and coercion to sign interrogation minutes, called for an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into these cases.
The spiritual leader of Bahrain's Shiites, warning about the consequences of governments' neglect of religion and human dignity, emphasized, "Targeting religious scholars and attempting to distort religious teachings makes it necessary for followers of the faith to defend their beliefs and lives."
