AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Friday prayer leader of Baghdad, Iraq said the recent turmoil in Syria is part of a plot hatched by the West and the Zionist regime.
It is part of the so-called new Middle East plan recently announced by US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ayatollah Sayed Yaseen Mousawi said in his Friday prayer sermon yesterday.
The West has worked on this plan for years, he said, adding that after the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation, they began implementing it and used the operation as a pretext to try to destroy the people of Palestine and Lebanon.
Now it has come to occupying and spreading war in Syria, he went on to say.
The cleric said the Americans and other Western countries want to split up Syria in order to serve the interests of Israel.
He also criticized the president of Turkey for having armed and trained the terrorist groups in Syria’s Idlib.
Al-Mousawi added that while talking about Gaza and pretending to defend it, the Turkish president has had extensive economic interactions with Israel.
The cleric further said that the people of Iraq will not allow the enemies’ new Middle East plan to be implemented.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.
In recent days, the foreign-backed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham armed group has captured a number of cities in the Arab country.
It launched a large-scale attack in Aleppo and Idlib provinces in the northwest of Syria on November 27, seizing several areas. Since then, the Syrian government forces have been engaged in fierce clashes to regain ground.
