Israeli Knesset approves bill to revoke citizenship of Palestinian prisoners

The Israeli Knesset passed on Monday night the first reading of a bill that would rescind the citizenship or residency permit of Palestinian prisoners who receive funds from the Palestinian Authority.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Israeli Knesset passed on Monday night the first reading of a bill that would rescind the citizenship or residency permit of Palestinian prisoners who receive funds from the Palestinian Authority.

The bill passed with 89 votes, with extensive support from both the coalition and opposition, with just eight voting against.

According to the bill, anyone sentenced to jail time for his/her part in 'hostile activity' and receives funding from the Palestinian Authority is liable to have his/her Israeli citizenship or residency revoked and will be exiled to the West Bank or the Gaza Strip.

The proposal states that the process will include “checks and balances” to ensure that the rights of the person in question are not violated.

The bill was first introduced on 9 January 2023 and yesterday, 30 January, a revised proposed bill was discussed in a joint Knesset committee, which approved the expedited legislative process.
