Algerian FM Calls on NAM Members for More Action on Decisions

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Medelci called on the 17 observer states which are present in the meeting to focus on the reasons why the decisions adopted in previous meetings of the organization have so far failed to materialize.He said this will oblige the member states to feel committed to undertaking the decisions to be made by the present meeting.The Algerian foreign minister also believed the 16th NAM is certainly a chance for member states to promote ties.Commenting on the Syrian crisis, he expressed hope that the NAM Summit will make good decisions on the issue.Representatives of nearly 120 nations, including dozens of heads-of-state, have convened in Tehran this week for the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.The Non-Aligned Movement is a Cold War organization that intends to provide a forum for countries that were not allied with either the United States or the Soviet Union. But from its origins in the 1950s there were members that did not fit that description, and since the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991 the group has struggled for both identity and clout.Now, its system of rotating leadership has put it back in the spotlight, as its summit is set for Tehran at a time of the western sanctions against Iran due to its peaceful nuclear program. /219
