(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A senior Iranian lawmaker has expressed hope that Syria’s presence in the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran would be a turning point in resolving the Arab country’s crisis.
The participation of Syria in the NAM summit in Iran's capital, Tehran, indicates stability has been restored in this country, Chairman of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Saturday.
Heading a high-level Iranian delegation, Boroujerdi arrived in Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Saturday to discuss the current state of affairs with Syrian officials.
Boroujerdi added that he will hold talks with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and parliament speaker, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham during his two-day visit.
Prior to his trip to Syria, Boroujerdi said the US has failed in its attempts to alter Damascus’ political structure by using Europe’s capacity and provoking certain Arab countries.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ for the unrest and deadly violence, but the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
On Thursday, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran would present a “rational and acceptable” proposal to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria during the next week’s NAM summit.
“During the Non-Aligned Movement summit, the Islamic Republic of Iran will discuss a proposal on Syria with participating countries,” Salehi said.
The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held in the Iranian capital on August 26-31.
