(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The organizers of the online campaign say some Saudi women drove around the capital, Riyadh, before dawn on Friday without incident.
The campaign follows the detention of a Saudi woman last month after she posted a video of her driving on Twitter and Facebook.
Instead of organizing a protest, the organizers of the campaign have urged women who have driving licenses obtained abroad to get behind the wheel without relying on male drivers.
The main Facebook page for the campaign, dubbed Women2Drive, planned the action to start on June 17 and continue "until a royal decree allowing women to drive is issued."
The group says women joining the campaign should not challenge the authorities if they are stopped and questioned and should abide by the country's dress code.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that bans women -- both Saudi and foreign -- from driving. Saudi women are also barred from voting, deprived of a choice in marriage, divorce and children's custody.
The females are dictated to and guarded by male relatives and cannot travel without the consent of a male guardian.
