(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Khalil Assaf, head of the independent figures in the West Bank, told Ma'an on Tuesday that discussions between the parties had been ongoing to implement a unity deal signed in Cairo this month.
Both parties agreed to form a joint committee on the topic after the Fatah leadership meets in Ramallah, Assaf said. He urged them to act in good faith as the issue is particularly delicate.
Fatah, meanwhile, will recommend postponing local elections, an official said Monday.
Mohammad Shtayyeh of the party's central committee said the unity deal between Fatah and Hamas created a new situation where all decisions must be made by national consensus.
Since 2007, the West Bank and Gaza have been ruled separately by the rival factions.
In February, the Palestinian government in Ramallah scheduled elections for July but Hamas vowed not to facilitate polls prior to an agreement. Elections have not been held since 2006.
But Palestinian factions agreed last week in Cairo to form a joint transitional government to prepare for elections.
Shtayyeh says elections must be held across both territories. However, he noted, members of the Central Elections Committee and electoral court judges must be chosen first.
