King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz would leave the kingdom on Monday, Saudi sources were quoted as saying by DPA news agency on Sunday.
King Abdullah was admitted to hospital on Friday after a blood clot complicated his back problem and doctors have recommended more rest.
The 86-year-old monarch's half brother, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, is due to arrive in Riyadh before Abdullah's departure.
The 85-year-old Sultan has himself been undergoing cancer treatment for years and spends much of his time living in Morocco.
The ailing king has curtailed his activities since June. The illness also forced the monarch to miss his last cabinet meeting.
The king resigned as head of the country's National Guard earlier this week and transferred the influential post to his son Prince Mitab bin Abdullah, 57, in an apparent sign that the elderly monarch is beginning to lessen some of his duties.
King Abdullah has been head of the National Guard since 1962.
He has also handed over his traditional supervisory duties for the annual hajj pilgrimage to his deputy prime minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud.
