HIGH POINT, North Carolina -- The High Point City Council approved a measure to build a new mosque in the city on Monday night.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency ; HIGH POINT, North Carolina -- The High Point City Council approved a measure to build a new mosque in the city on Monday night.

Representatives from the Islamic Center of High Point say a new facility is needed to serve the growing Muslim population in area. The request was for a total of seven acres of land on the east side of Allen Jay Road.

The land is near an elementary school which had some concerned about an increase in traffic.

"I think just the additional traffic alone is going to be a problem, maybe a severe problem,” said resident David Campbell. “I think at best they may have to create turning lanes or traffic signals, maybe at Baker Road and maybe at Fairfield Road. I think that's something that should be considered anyway."

"We are using our facility after hours,” said Uzma Zaman, of the Islamic Center of High Point. “We will not overlap with the school timing. Our facility will start when the kids will be out of the school because our kids go to the public schools too. They will be out of the school like 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 and we will start using that facility mostly from 5 to 9."

The city council unanimously approved the request. The Islamic Center plans to build a worship center and educational facility.
