Ahlul Bayt News Agency, A Turkish community in the Netherlands is increasingly concerned over the fact that extreme right-wing and anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders, whose Party for Freedom (PVV) campaigns against Muslim immigration as its main platform, might be involved in forming a minority coalition government in the country.
In a statement made on Sunday, the Union of European Turkish Democrats (UETD) Netherland’s branch expressed its concerns that Wilders’ PVV party may be indirectly involved in coalition-forming from outside of a government that will most likely be formed by the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). During European Parliament elections in early summer, running an anti-Muslim and anti-Turkey campaign, Wilders secured 17 percent of the vote, and PVV became the second-largest party after the CDA and before the Socialists in what was once known as one of the most liberal countries on earth.
The statement also called on the VVD and CDA parties to stop meeting with Wilders, and to seek alternative political forces to form the coalition. There are nearly 1 million Muslims in the Netherlands. Stressing that Wilders does not respect the fundamental rights and freedoms that are enshrined in the Dutch constitution, the statement said that this will further polarize the society and there was no room to accept the fact that the VVD may take part in the coalition government.
