A statement by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said that coalition troops were in hot pursuit of a suspected Taliban commander in the troubled region when they saw an assault rifle protruding from the window of a house. They then opened fire. It was later found that a woman was killed in the shoot-out.
"Inside the room, they found one woman dead and another with a minor wound as a result of the gunfire. An AK-47 was next to the killed female," the statement read.
The overwhelming majority of civilian deaths and injuries in the Afghan war have prompted protests against the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan.
Civilian casualties saw a surge by 31 percent in the first six months of 2010, according to the United Nations. Casualties among children rose by 55 percent.
