Afghan Government and Security Officials Meet Shia Leaders

As the month of Muharram approaches, government and security officials in Gereshk district of Helmand Province, Afghanistan, met with prominent Shia community leaders to discuss security arrangements for upcoming religious gatherings.

AhlulBayt News Agency: the meeting took place in the conference hall of the Mohammadia Grand Mosque in Gereshk. Among those in attendance were the district mayor, the police chief, the intelligence director, and several other local officials. The discussions centered on ensuring the safety of mosques and congregation halls (takayas), particularly the Mohammadia Grand Mosque, during Muharram.

Speaking at the meeting, the Mayor of Gereshk highlighted the significance of Muharram and the legacy of Imam Hussain (A.S.), stating that his path represents sacrifice, the elevation of God’s word, and the unity of the people. He emphasized that there are no restrictions placed on Shia religious observances, and local authorities are actively supporting the Shia community in holding their ceremonies.

The police chief reaffirmed his commitment to fully securing Muharram programs, especially in Shia mosques and takayas. Similarly, the district’s intelligence director also expressed readiness to assist in safeguarding these events.

In response, Shia elders welcomed the presence of the officials, thanked them for their support, and offered suggestions for enhancing the security and organization of the Muharram commemorations.
