Kabul Residents Protest Worsening Power Outages in Summer Heat

Kabul residents are facing daily power outages during extreme summer heat, with electricity available for only a few hours.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Residents of Kabul are voicing frustration over ongoing power outages during the intense summer heat.

They report having electricity for only a few hours each day, which is insufficient to meet their basic needs.

Mohammad Kazem, a Kabul resident, said power sometimes comes for two to four hours, and sometimes not at all. “It’s 1 p.m. now, and we’ve had no electricity since 8 a.m.,” he said.

Another resident, Lal Agha, noted that electricity is often available during hours when it’s not needed, averaging only six to seven hours per day.

Many citizens are urging authorities to take serious action to resolve the electricity crisis.

Miskin, another Kabul resident, told TOLOnews that electricity is essential, especially in the summer heat, and called on Breshna Company to ensure supply.

In response, Breshna Company announced the activation of the 105-megawatt Tarakhil thermal power plant to help reduce outages.

Ahmad Wais Sargand, Deputy Head of Operations at Breshna, said the plant will contribute 80 megawatts to the national grid during the hot season.

Experts argue that solving the power crisis requires both immediate and long-term strategies.

Economic analyst Abdul Zahoor Modabber suggested short-term solutions like household solar systems and long-term investment in solar energy projects.

Afghanistan currently imports much of its electricity from neighboring countries such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Tajikistan.

Despite recent efforts, experts warn that without boosting domestic production, power outages will remain a daily challenge for Kabul residents.
