ISIS militants have executed dozens of civilians after they were defeated in Ramadi on Monday. The city has been so greatly affected that residents won’t be able to return any time soon.
According to Iraqi military officials, ISIS insurgents kidnapped 25 families in Ramadi, totalling 40 people, and later executed them in eastern areas of Anbar province. The victims include women and children.
Iraqi forces liberated Anbar from ISIS after seven months on December 28th. Residents were warned prior to the offensive to leave the city, but ISIS blocked their way and used them as human shields.
The Iraqi Prime Minister paid a site visit to the city a day later and planted the Iraqi flag there to highlight the victory.
Member of Ramadi Mayoral Council Ibrahim Awsaj told media that at least 3,000 civilian buildings have completely been destroyed with thousands more affected by the fighting.
He revealed that almost all government buildings in Ramadi have been rigged with explosive devices by ISIS.
Public services such as water, electricity, schools and hospitals are not available at the moment, Awsaj added.
