Sunni and Shia clerics on Monday (June 9th) in Baghdad held a religious conference titled "One Hand for A Secure Iraq", calling on Iraqis to renounce sectarianism and support the security forces in every way.
"The conference, which was attended by 58 Sunni and Shia clerics from various areas of the country, discussed the importance of holding joint Friday prayers and unifying Sunni and Shia religious discourse as the holy month of Ramadan approaches," said Sheikh Mohammed al-Obaidi, imam and preacher at al-Rahman mosque in Baghdad.
The conference, held at al-Khilani mosque in central Baghdad, also called on Iraqis to put aside their differences, focus on commonalities, support the army and police forces, speak out against terrorism and extremist groups, and promote the rule of law, al-Obaidi said.
Conference attendees also pledged to hold similar conferences in the future inviting as many clerics of both sects as possible, he said.
