Ahlul Bayt News Agency ; Macedonian Muslims have called on their government and the international community to fight the rising radical Wahhabi groups in the country.
The head of Macedonia's official Islamic Religious Community, Suleyman Rexhepi, has urged the Skopje government, the United States and the European Union to adopt “radical measures” against the Wahhabis, AP reported on Monday.
Rexhepi warned that the Wahhabis are seeking to distort Macedonia's image.
Rexhepi's Islamic Religious Community has engaged in a power struggle with the Wahhabis who are believed to control five mosques in the capital city of Skopje.
Albanian minority which constitutes a quarter of Macedonia's population are mostly Muslims.
Wahhabism is an extremely intolerant interpretation of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia, which gained momentum after the discovery of oil in the kingdom in 1938.
