Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a telephone conversation on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments on US-Israeli aggression against Iran.
During the phone call, Iran’s top diplomat expounded on the different aspects of US-Israeli aggression against Iran, emphasizing that civilian centers including schools, hospitals, residential areas and also historical monuments have been targeted following the attack by aggressors which is a gross violation of the international law and fundamental principles of the human rights.
Araghchi pointed to the dire consequences and widespread damages caused by the US and Israeli attack against Iran and called for the decisive and explicit condemnation of these heinous acts by the international community and responsible bodies.
He stressed Iran’s inherent right for self-defense against the war imposed by the US and Israeli regime against Iran, reiterating that Islamic Republic of Iran had earlier warned its neighbors and concerned parties in the region that it will target the US bases and Israeli positions in the region.
Such measures are taken within the framework of the legitimate defense and based on the recognized principles of the international law, he said, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers defending the security of its citizens ‘a basic and fundamental responsibility’.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Araghchi referred to the responsibilities of the United Nations towards safeguarding the international peace and security, and expected the United Nations to take more responsible measures in explicit condemnation of the aggression taken against Iran.
Silence and insufficient reactions in the face of such measures could lay the ground for the continuation of instability and intensification of tensions in the region, Iran’s top diplomat added.
The UN secretary general, for his part, pointed to the clear-cut aggression of the United States and Israeli regime against Iran, emphasizing the necessity of respecting the principles of the international law and avoiding the intensification of tensions.
There is no doubt that Iran has reserved rights to defend itself against US and Israeli aggression, Guterres emphasized.
The UN chief also stressed the necessity of making effort to prevent the expansion of conflicts and reduce the damages as a result of US-Israeli aggression against Iran.
