AhlulBayt News Agency - A camp housing members of the terrorist anti-Iran Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) has reportedly come under a mortar attack injuring 40 of the terrorists.
Camp Liberty near Baghdad International Airport was hit on Monday, Reuters reported. The attack also caused major destruction to the facility.
One source said the incident saw more than 50 projectiles landing at the premises, while another reported hearing 20 to 30 explosions in the airport’s vicinity, where the camp lies.
Last October, at least 20 MKO members were killed in an incident during which a barrage of rockets was fired at the camp. Wathiq al-Battat, the leader of the Iraq-based Mukhtar Army militia group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
In December 2011, the United Nations (UN) and Baghdad agreed to relocate some 3,000 MKO members from Camp Ashraf, now known as Camp New Iraq in the eastern Iraq’s Diyala Province, to Camp Liberty, also known as Camp Hurriyet, which is a former US military base.
The last group of the MKO terrorists was evicted by the Iraqi government in September 2013 and relocated to the camp to await potential relocation to third countries.
The MKO is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community and has committed numerous terrorist acts against Iranians and Iraqis.
In 1986, the terrorist group’s members fled Iran for Iraq, where they received now-executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s support and set up Camp Ashraf near the Iranian border. The terror group sided with Saddam during his 1980-1988 war on Iran.
