AhlulBayt News Agency - On Sunday, Head of Iraq's Salahuddin Provincial Council Ahmed Karim announced, that an agreement had been reached to order ceasefire in Tuz Khurmatu District.
The recent wave of violence in the city of Tuz Khurmatu has reportedly come to an end after delegates from the Kurdish “Peshmerga” and Iraqi-Turkmen “Hashd Al-Sha’abi” agreed to an open-ended ceasefire on Sunday.
Karim said in a brief statement “The two parties agreed to [declare] ceasefire.”
Earlier today, Head of Salahuddin Provincial Council Ahmed Karim and the Police Chief General Damen al-Jubouri arrived in Tuz Khurmatu to defuse the situation in the district.
Tuz Khurmatu has long been a hotbed for violence between the Kurdish and Turkmen communities, as the latter is often bullied by the Peshmerga forces inside this city in the Salaheddine Governorate.
The Turkmen population of Tuz Khurmatu is primarily Shia Muslim; these civilians are discriminated against for their ethnic and religious make-up.
Over the years, the Turkmen of Tuz Khurmatu have built a strong relationship with the Iraqi government and powerful paramilitary forces like Kata’eb Hezbollah and Hashd Al-Sha’abi.
