The expanding scope of appointments and government oversight in Bahrain over political, social, and religious institutions has once again raised questions about the extent of society's authority in electing its representatives and managers.
The news outlet Mar'at al-Bahrain, in an analysis referring to the ever-expanding scope of appointments in Bahrain, wrote that the "appointment syndrome" has spread from ministries and the Shura Council to parliamentary elections, civil institutions, local councils, husseiniyas, and even the selection of prayer imams. This phenomenon, it said, reflects the "psychological illness of power" in the Al Khalifa regime, which can no longer see any social space without intervention and control.
