Grand Ayatollah Sistani condemns war on Iran, urges immediate ceasefire

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, top Shia cleric in Iraq, has strongly condemned the ongoing war against Iran and called for an immediate end to the US-Israeli aggression.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, top Shia cleric in Iraq, has strongly condemned the ongoing war against Iran and called for an immediate end to the US-Israeli aggression.

In a statement released Wednesday via Iraq’s Alrabiaa Network Television, Ayatollah Sistani expressed deep grief over the conflict, which has resulted in the martyrdom of Iranian citizens, including patriotic defenders, children, and innocent civilians, alongside massive damage to public and private property.

The Ayatollah highlighted the alarming escalation of military operations, noting that the conflict has spread to include other countries and their assets, creating unprecedented scenes of chaos in the region.

He criticized the unilateral decision by the criminal US-Israeli regime to launch a broad attack on a UN member state, violating the UN Charter and threatening severe regional and global consequences, including long-term anarchy.

Ayatollah Sistani firmly declared his rejection of this unjust war, calling on all Muslims and the world’s free people to condemn the aggression and stand in solidarity with the Iranian people.

He urged influential international actors, particularly Islamic nations, to exert all efforts to stop the war and pursue a peaceful, fair resolution to Iran’s nuclear file in accordance with international law.

Analysts note that the joint US-Israeli invasion, which began on February 28, 2026, following the martyrdom of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, disregarded ongoing indirect negotiations. In response, Iran launched precise retaliatory strikes against Israeli positions and US bases, citing its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and warned that further escalation will invite a harsher reaction.
