Criticism Over Two Pastors’ Interview with a Muslim Television Network

An interview by two American Baptist pastors and scholars with a Muslim television network to promote a book on Islamophobia has drawn criticism in the United States.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A recent interview by two pastors and researchers affiliated with the American Baptist Church with Imam Abdul-Malik Mujahid, the host of a television program on Chicago-based Muslim Network TV, has sparked reactions and criticism across U.S. intellectual and media circles.

Anna Piela and Michael Wolf, a married couple who are pastors and university academics, used the interview to introduce their new book, “Confronting Islamophobia in the Church,” a work published with the stated aim of countering anti-Islam attitudes within Christian communities. Critics, however, argue that both the book and the interview contribute to normalizing an inclination toward Islam while overlooking what they describe as its perceived threats in the United States.

Critics have also questioned the choice of Abdul-Malik Mujahid as the interview counterpart. Mujahid previously served as president of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), an organization that some investigative reports have accused of promoting extremist viewpoints. Mujahid has, however, in later years been active in interfaith dialogue initiatives and has taken positions opposing groups such as ISIS.

Piela and Wolf, for their part, have emphasized the necessity of tolerance and religious pluralism, describing Islamophobia as a pervasive phenomenon in Western culture. Their critics contend that by labeling criticism as “Islamophobia,” the two scholars dismiss any scrutiny of Islamism or its social consequences and fail to provide clear responses to concerns about religious extremism.

The dispute has once again brought to the forefront a longstanding debate in the American intellectual and media space over the boundary between legitimate criticism, efforts to counter anti-Muslim discrimination, and confronting extremist movements.
