As the ISIS security crisis continues in Iraq, a total of 849 Iraqis were reported killed during the first month of 2016 alone, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) reports.
490 casualties are civilians and 359 others are security forces, including Kurdish Peshmerga, SWAT and militias fighting alongside the Iraqi Army but excluding Anbar Operations.
The report also reveals that 1,450 Iraqis have also been injured by the on-going acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts in the country.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubis, deplored the continuing high casualty toll, particularly a sharp increase in the number of injuries among civilians in January compared to the previous months.
In December 2015, the UNAMI reported that 506 Iraqis were killed and 867 more injured.
Kubis warned over the civilian casualties and stressed out that Iraqis, civilians in particular, continue to pay the price in this conflict. “The Iraqi people should have the opportunity to live in peace and security,” he added.
“The figures showed that Baghdad province was the worst affected, with 1,084 civilian casualties (299 killed, 785 injured), Diyala 61 killed and 79 injured, Nineveh 55 killed and 24 injured, while Kirkuk had 12 killed and 3 injured, and Salahadin 2 killed and 14 injured,” UNAMI reports.
