A senior adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the main purpose behind creation of Takfiri groups was to confront the tide of Islamic Awakening.

AhlulBayt News Agency - A senior adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the main purpose behind creation of Takfiri groups was to confront the tide of Islamic Awakening.

Addressing the second conference on the threat of Takfiri currents held in the holy city of Qom, Ali Akbar Velayati noted that the wave of Islamic Awakening began in the early years of the 19th century with the aim of combating the Western onslaught against the Muslim world.

He noted that the second wave of Islamic Awakening started with the Islamic Revolution in Iran and that countries like the US, Britain and Saudi Arabia created al-Qaeda and later such groups as ISIL to stand against this wave and the anti-Israeli axis of resistance in the region.

The international conference on 'Fight against Takfirism' began on Wednesday and wrapped up on Thursday in Qom, Iran in the presence of a group of Shia and Sunni Ulema from 25 foreign countries along with some domestic scientific and cultural figures, including grand Ayatollahs Nasser Makarem Shirazi and Jafar Sobhani.

It aimed to identify and shed light on the Takfiri and extremist ideologies and their danger, spread moderate Islam and enhance Muslim unity.
