Grand Ayatollah Sistani receives Iraqi doctor after returning from Gaza

His Eminence the supreme religious authority Sayed al-Sistani, received the Iraqi doctor Dr. Mohammed Abu Ragheef al-Mousawi after his return from the Gaza Strip.

AhlulBayt News Agency: His Eminence the supreme religious authority Sayed al-Sistani, received the Iraqi doctor Dr. Mohammed Abu Ragheef al-Mousawi after his return from the Gaza Strip.

A statement from Sayed al-Sistani's office said,"the supreme religious authority, Sayed Ali al-Sistani, received the Iraqi doctor, Mohammed Taher Kamel Abu Ragheef al-Mousawi, and listened to an explanation from him about the difficult health and medical conditions in the stricken Gaza Strip.

"Sayed al-Sistani thanked the Iraqi doctor for his efforts throughout his stay there,"the statement added.

Born in Najaf in the 1980s, Abu Ragheef moved to the United Kingdom with his family, where he specialized in trauma surgery, upper limb reconstruction, and peripheral nerve surgery. In early 2024, he joined the "Fajr Scientific" medical delegation to volunteer in Gaza’s hospitals.

Over six months, he performed more than 300 complex surgeries and treated over 1,200 injured patients despite critical shortages of medical supplies. One of his most remarkable achievements was successfully reattaching the severed arm of a nine-year-old girl, who had lost it in an Israeli airstrike on Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

On January 25, 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called to commend his efforts, describing him as a “humanitarian ambassador.” Following an official invitation, Abu Ragheef travelled to Iraq, where he was welcomed by the prime minister.

His Eminence Sayed al-Sistani has always had clear positions regarding the current events in Gaza and the suffering of the Palestinian people, stressing the importance of supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination, the need to stand with the Palestinians in their plight, and condemning the violence to which civilians are subjected as a result of aggression.

A statement issued by His Eminence's office after the recent events and the aggression on the Gaza Strip said:"We call on the world – once again – to stand up to this terrible brutality and prevent the occupation forces from continuing to implement their plans to inflict more harm on the oppressed Palestinian people. We also call on Muslims in particular to unite and jointly pressure for the stoppage of the war of genocide in precious Gaza and for the provision of more aid to its dear people."

He added that "ending the tragedy of this decent people—which has been going on for seven decades—by gaining its legitimate rights and removing the occupation of its usurped lands is the only way to establish security and peace in this region, and without that, the resistance of the aggressors will continue and the spiral of violence will continue to claim more innocent lives."

Sayed al-Sistani's recent positions reflect his commitment to humanitarian and religious values that call for peace and justice, and reflect his deep concern about the current situation and what has happened and is happening in Palestine.
