As part of the annual preparations for the Tuwairij Run, one of the largest Ashura mourning rituals, the custodians of the Imam al‑Hussain Shrine laid sand across the entrances of the holy courtyard. The measure is taken each year to ensure the safety of participants and to manage the massive crowds that flow into the shrine during the ritual.
