In a meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi Tuesday afternoon, President Rouhani while hailing the Syrian nation and army for resisting against conspiracies and full-scale war for four years, said, “the crimes that the terrorist groups committed in Iraq revealed more than ever their plots against Islam and the region.”
While stressing that Syrian issues would only be resolved within the framework of dialogue and political negotiations, he added, “the Islamic Republic supports restoration of stability and security throughout Syria and the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.”
President Rouhani commended the expansion of bilateral ties particularly in the economic field and dubbed the Syrian Prime Minister’s visit to Iran as a step forward in developing relations between the two countries.
“Tehran and Damascus can further increase their cooperation on energy, transports, mines and agriculture,” said Rouhani.
The Syrian PM, for his part, expressed gratitude for Iran's support during the four-year war and deemed it necessary for further cooperation between Iran and Syria in countering plots aimed at breaking the Syrian resistance line.
“Syria is reviewing the UN plans and initiatives on ceasefire and resuming peace,” said Wael Nader al-Halqi.
While criticizing some regional countries for aiding the terrorist groups, he said, “Syria will welcome any initiative that does not harm its national sovereignty and brings the country into integrity.”
He also welcomed Tehran-Damascus all-out cooperation in various economic and industrial fields.
