World Shia Studies Assembly thanks Pope Leo XIV for justice-seeking stance against US war rhetoric

The World Shia Studies Assembly has issued a formal letter of appreciation to Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the world's Catholics, commending his steadfast and principled positions against the warmongering policies of the United States administration toward the Islamic Republic of Iran

ABNA24 - The World Shia Studies Assembly has issued a formal letter of appreciation to Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the world's Catholics, commending his steadfast and principled positions against the warmongering policies of the United States administration toward the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Assembly lauded the Pontiff's efforts to uphold shared moral values, human dignity, and sustainable peace amid escalating threats from Washington.

The letter emphasized that the Pope's anti-oppression stance—calling for an end to suffering and violence—reflects the spiritual heritage of divine prophets and the teachings of Abrahamic faiths.

"At a time when the world is in dire need of the voice of reason, justice, and compassion, your responsible remarks and positions have once again highlighted the crucial role of religious leaders in safeguarding the moral conscience of humanity," the letter read.

The Assembly noted that such conduct serves as a reminder that followers of various faiths can unite on common ground to defend peace, human life, and the sanctity of religious values.

"We consider this humanitarian message a valuable step toward expanding coexistence, constructive dialogue, and strengthening cooperation among divine religions," the statement added. "Undoubtedly, the shared Abrahamic heritage—from the justice-seeking of the prophets to ethical and human counsel—can serve as a foundation for alleviating suffering and establishing a world based on respect and solidarity."

The praise comes amid heightened tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump's recent attacks on Pope Leo XIV. The U.S. president lambasted the Pontiff as "weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy" after the Pope condemned Trump's threat to destroy Iranian civilization as "truly unacceptable" and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Pope Leo has maintained that he will continue to speak out against the "madness of war," insisting that the message of the Gospel cannot be abused to justify military aggression.

The World Shiite Studies Assembly expressed hope that this spirit of truth-seeking will pave the way for broader engagement between global academic and religious centers, fostering mutual understanding with the ultimate goal of peace, human dignity, and spiritual growth.
