Ahlul Bayt (AS) News Agency (ABNA): Attributing successes to God plays a very important and prominent role in Islamic lifestyle and can be divided into several key aspects:
1. Strengthening Reliance on God: When a person attributes their successes to God, they are acknowledging the truth that everything they have comes from divine grace and mercy. This belief strengthens their trust in God and gives them peace and assurance. They know that ultimate success lies in God's hands, and this keeps them away from pride and arrogance.
2. Gratitude and Thankfulness for Blessings: Attributing success to God necessitates gratitude. A believer who understands that their successes are gifts from God feels an increased need to express thankfulness. This gratitude is not only verbal but practical, demonstrated through efforts to use these successes in ways that please God.
3. Avoiding Pride and Arrogance: One of the greatest pitfalls of success is pride and self-satisfaction. When a person considers their successes to be solely the result of their own efforts, they may become proud and see themselves as superior. But attributing success to God protects them from this danger, reminding them that everything comes from Him and they should not become arrogant.
4. Sense of Responsibility Toward Blessings: When a person views success as a blessing from God, they feel responsible for using it properly. They know they must employ these blessings in ways that please God and avoid using them for sin and disobedience.
5. Motivation for Greater Effort: Believing that success comes from God does not mean abandoning effort. On the contrary, a faithful person, while relying on God, uses means and strives toward success, knowing that God will not let their efforts go unrewarded. This belief increases their motivation to work harder and make use of opportunities.
6. Peace in Times of Failure: Attributing success to God also helps during failures. The person understands that even failures contain wisdom and purpose, and that everything is under divine will. This understanding helps them remain patient in face of difficulties and avoid despair.
Numerous Quranic verses indicate that everything comes from God, including successes. Some of these verses include:
1. "Say: 'O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.'" (3:26)
This verse clearly states that honor, disgrace, and all good (including successes) are in God's hands, and He grants them to whom He wills.
2. "And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help." (16:53)
This verse generally states that every blessing humans enjoy, including successes, comes from God.
3. "So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, 'Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qarun. Indeed, he is one of great fortune.'" (28:79)
This verse is about Qarun who attributed his wealth and success solely to his own planning and knowledge, without crediting God, and ultimately perished. This story serves as a lesson for people not to attribute successes to themselves.
4. "Whatever good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. And We have sent you as a messenger to mankind, and sufficient is Allah as Witness." (4:79)
Thus, in Islamic view, successes are by no means solely the result of individual effort and ability, but ultimately originate from God's grace and will. Attributing success to God is not merely a heartfelt belief, but must manifest in one's actions and speech. This belief keeps a person on the path of gratitude and humility, protects them from pride and arrogance, and increases their sense of responsibility toward divine blessings. This perspective forms the basis of proper reliance on God and gives the person peace and steadfastness in life's journey, both in successes and failures.
