Commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Qassem Soleimani took part in the Wednesday demonstration in Tehran to mark the 36th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution victory.
The internationally renowned commander was among the large crowds of people that poured into the streets of Tehran on Wednesday morning for the national celebration.
Carrying images of Imam Khomeini and Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, residents in the capital marched in procession to the Azadi (Liberty) Square, in a move seen by commentators as a gesture of allegiance to the Islamic Revolution 36 years after it toppled the monarchy of the US-backed Pahlavi regime.
In a statement at the conclusion of their huge rallies in Tehran, demonstrators underlined that Iran’s defensive achievements, including its missile capabilities, are not negotiable.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
Following an interim nuclear deal signed in Geneva in November 2013, two deadlines for a final, comprehensive deal have been missed, and now a third one is looming on July 1.
