Gen. Abdul Ghafar Safi, the provincial police chief, says six other policemen were wounded in the attack late Friday in Nawa district, where clashes were still underway early Saturday.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yusouf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack.
In an "open letter" to U.S. President Donald Trump last week, the insurgent group reiterated its calls for the withdrawal of all remaining U.S. troops.
Taliban militants were removed from power following the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, but they have stepped up activities in recent months, attempting to overrun several regions. During the past 16 years, the militants have been conducting terrorist attacks across the country, killing and displacing civilians.
In addition, the ISIS Takfiri terrorist group recently managed to take recruits from Afghan Taliban defectors.
Many parts of Afghanistan remain plagued by militancy despite the presence of foreign troops.
