United States: Islamic Center members hopeful students will stop throwing beer bottles at mosque

TUCSON, AZ - Members of the Islamic Center of Tucson met with building representatives for three high-rise student apartments near the University of Arizona on Monday.

The issue? Members of the mosque say rowdy students who live in the buildings are throwing beer bottles, cans and other objects from their balconies onto their property.

The center is right next to the buildings. City officials hope they resolved the issue going forward with a new plan geared at holding tenants accountable.

A representative from the Islamic Center says they've been dealing with this kind of behavior for the last fourteen months. Building officials that represent the Next, Level and Hub apartments say they will ban parties pending further investigation. They want to find out who is throwing things from the balconies. Council member Steve Kozachik says the building operators have agreed to place surveillance cameras on all four sides of the three buildings to capture who throws what in the future. If someone is caught, they could face fines and be kicked out.

Assad Alsasaddy says incidents continue to happen as recent as last weekend. He says video he took on his phone catches students from the Level apartment throwing beer bottles and cans at him. Alsasaddy says they were targeting him and cussing at him.

“They were using foul language against me, as soon as I got into the vehicle, they started cussing using foul language. SO I start filming and continue filming til I called the cops,” he said.

City officials don't believe this is a hate crime because they say objects have been thrown onto other surrounding properties. Officials say if someone get hurt from falling items whoever is responsible could face criminal charges.
