AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The deputy head of Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society said that the group’s jailed leader, Sheikh Ali Salman, still enjoys widespread popular support.
Al-Wefaq’s number two, Sheikh Hussein Al-Daihi, made the claim in a series of Twitter posts on Saturday as Sheikh Salman marked five years behind bars.
“Your people are with you,” Sheikh Al-Daihi wrote.
Sheikh Salman is a key figure in Bahrain’s pro-democracy movement, which is demanding reforms including a constitutional monarchy and elected prime minister.
While chairing the now outlawed Al-Wefaq group, Sheikh Salman was detained in 2015 on charges of ‘inciting hatred’. In November of last year, he was sentenced to life in prison for allegedly plotting with Qatar to stoke unrest.
According to Al-Wefaq’s deputy leader, the Bahraini people are “paying the price” for Sheikh Salman’s imprisonment.
“Your reading [of the situation] was right,” Sheikh Al-Daihi added. “Your opinion was the truth … and the reasons for your forced absence from your people has become clear. It is so that you do not stand in the face of failed and deadly projects and policies.”
