AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s public prosecutor on Thursday charged jailed Shiite cleric Sheikh Issa al-Qafas with insulting the king and inciting hatred against the regime.
According to activists, the new charges are part of an ongoing campaign of reprisals against the cleric this time for performing a majlis aza (mourning congregations) to commemorate martyrs Ahmad al-Malali and Ali al-Arab who were executed in July.
The cleric was then beaten, tortured and put in solitary confinement after being insulted by a prison officer. He was also deprived of family visitations and contacting them.
Sheikh al-Qafas, who was forcibly disappeared in January 2016, was slapped with a 10-year prison sentence in October 2017.
The cleric was accused of forming the so-called Al-Basta Group along with 16 other defendants.
