AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement called on Manama to free six of the county’s women political prisoners.
In a statement on Friday, Al-Wefaq said that the six, Zakia al-Barbouri, Medina Ali, Hajar Mansoor and sisters Fatima, Amal and Iman Abdullah, were jailed for expressing their opinions.
The six are serving prison sentences ranging from three to five years behind bars following trials marred by allegations of torture and due process violations.
According to Al-Wefaq, the torture and blackmail that the women are subjected to are meant to dissuade Bahrainis from pursuing demands for democratic reforms.
The opposition group claims that more than 300 Bahraini women have been jailed in recent years.
